Air conditioning energy assessments
An Air Conditioning Inspection regime was introduced into UK legislation as a result of the EU’s Energy
Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD).
Businesses responsible for the operation and maintenance of air conditioning equipment are now required to ensure that systems are inspected in accordance with new legal requirements.
Key facts: Buildings in England and Wales with air conditioning systems over 12 kW in size require inspection.
- All Inspections must be carried out by an accredited inspector
- Inspections remain valid for 5 years
- New equipment must be inspected within 5 years of the installation date
- The inspector will make recommendations in respect of energy savings
- The inspection will review service and maintenance records
- The inspector will advise on compliance with the FGas regulations
- All air conditioning inspection reports will be lodged with DCLG – Landmark
Inspection reports confirm performance of the current air conditioning system and identify actions that can be taken to improve efficiency. The inspection will also evaluate the adequacy of the maintenance regime and provide guidance for future replacement or upgrading strategies.
The Inspection will consider the original design in tent and equipment sizing. The refrigeration system will be closely inspected with particular attention given to possible refrigerant gas leakage. System set points will be reviewed and adjustments will be made as necessary to reduce energy use and running cost.
The inspection report will be prepared in accordance with CIBSE guidelines (TM 44) and will be lodged through the Landmark lodgement scheme. Follow up meetings can be arranged to discuss the outcome of the report and consider future strategy.
